Aviation Ground School
New 2027/28 School Year
This senior-only program provides students with aviation ground school instruction and hands-on experiences designed to prepare them for FAA examinations and aviation career pathways. Students will study aircraft systems, aerodynamics, flight instruments, federal aviation regulations, airspace, weather, navigation, airport operations, and aeronautical decision-making. The curriculum prepares students for the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test and FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Knowledge Test.
Students will complete the FAA TRUST Certificate and receive preparation for commercial drone certification. Strong finishers may also prepare for the FAA Ground Instructor Knowledge Test. Students will receive approximately 2.5 - 3 hours of Redbird LD flight simulator experience with a JWA flight instructor and participate in hands-on sUAS (drone) flight, safety, and maintenance training in the JWA hangar. The course has 128 contact hours (approximately 120 lecture/8 lab).
Students are required to provide their own transportation to and from Clow Airport. A Lewis registration application for the program is required.
Estimated Cost: FAA Part 107 Knowledge Test – approximately $175 per attempt. Additional FAA examination fees may apply. FAA TRUST Certificate is free.
Certifications may include: FAA TRUST Certificate, FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Test, and FAA Ground Instructor Knowledge Test.

Guidance Notes: Students selected for enrollment in college-level courses must have appropriate academic qualifications, which include a minimum 3.0 GPA, Algebra I and II with a grade of C or higher, Physics with a grade of C or higher, and a high level of motivation and adequate time to devote to studying a college-level course.
